If you're able to talk and communicate in an open manner with your kids, you've already achieved a lot of what it takes to be a good parent. Although this is rather straightforward, if this basic feeling of openness and trust isn't present, it becomes difficult to focus on more advanced concepts. Sadly, many parents bring up their children making the exact same mistakes that their own parents made with them. When there are serious dysfunctions in the family, this can lead to a repeating and vicious cycle. However, if you are reading this then at least you are making the noble effort to become aware. For many people, parenting is something that must be learned by trial and error, as it's not taught to us by anyone. By structuring their early environment, especially when they are toddlers, you can provide a great foundation for your kids to grow upon. The easiest way to help children understand what they can and cannot do is by providing this early structure within their lives. This type of child rearing can be referred to as having boundaries or a framework. Also, as you know very well, toddlers will be constantly probing and testing you. This type of testing can come in the form of seeing exactly what you will do when they do certain things. You should know that your child is not trying to defeat you, but it will seem like they are challenging you on a daily basis. As you can see, structure within the home is something that is essential in order to raise your toddler the right way. Once your kids have reached their teens, you'll realize that this is probably the worst stage of the parenting process. It is a combination of hormonal changes, body changes, and changes about who they are and how they relate to the world. You can help yourself and your teens by avoiding the one thing you hated when you were a teen: yet another lecture. You need to find a way to talk to them without it seeming to be condescending. The best strategy is to talk with them from the standpoint of an adult that can help. Think of the times that you have been lectured by your boss and how it felt inside. So adopt the same type of rational and respectful strategy with your teens, and they will appreciate it even if they never tell you. Not being aware of your children, or how their life seems to be going, is a mistake that most young parents make when raising their kids. If you do not see your kids as much is used to, this might be a sign that something is going on that you might not approve of. Understanding if something is wrong begins with not only seeing your kids regularly, but talking to them too. Always be aware of unusual behaviors that they might have which might mean that something is wrong. More times than not, the parents that fail ignore the obvious signs that they should have seen which could have stopped something bad from happening. With patience and love, make sure that you help your teenager in case they start getting out of line and help them back to balance once again. While you have to start with where you are now, the best time to start applying wise parenting techniques is really from the time your children are born. As they grow, it is important that you are consistent in your application of what you have established. |
