The mysterious nature of death makes people uneasy talking about it. It is rarely anything humans discuss often. Most humans prefer to think that they would go on living forever.

Death is somewhat a fearsome concept for most people. Still, without undertakers, the duty of laying the deceased to rest would not be done. Could just any other person become a good undertaker? Here are some qualities and characteristics that a person must possess in order to become a successful undertaker.

Funeral directors are experts who organize activities and services associated with interments and wakes necessary for the interment of someone who passed away. Given below are a few of the important skills and personal qualities that undertakers should possess to rise in their profession.

A funeral director should be energetic and be ready to work beyond normal schedule, as he should be available 24 hours a day. He should be ready to spend a lot of time outside because of the unique nature of the task.

To become an undertaker, a person should be able to interact well and should accommodate the viewpoints of others. He must be able to handle and communicate with people of different age groups and people having different religious and cultural backgrounds. Understanding and sympathy will be of great importance in the course of his job. As a person overseeing the funeral service, he is also required to comfort the family in time of grief, and he should not allow distress or sorrow to cloud his mental faculties.

As a person in charge with the interment service, the undertaker must project a dignified and calm personality, while taking care that his disposition doesn't intensify the sorrow of the bereaved family members and friends.

By nature, those who supervise funeral services should not be narrow minded. They should be willing to honour the traditions and beliefs of all religions and must be learned in this area. As various people follow various burial rites and methods, it is advantageous to have understanding of these.

A funeral service coordinator must have good organisational and management skills. Making preparations for critical services like flowers, hearse etc will entail coordination with many providers and will need leadership and management skills.

An undertaker should be proficient in legal matters and should know the legal formalities to be followed, or the formal approvals required from the State authorities before conducting burial services. He will have to be fully conscious of procedures to be followed with respect to collecting death certificates or claims for insurance.

Lastly, an undertaker must ensure that his driver's license is regularly updated and that he can drive the funeral vehicle during the service.
