A brief description of fiberglass is needed to understand the details that make fiberglass construction very popular. In the first stage of its production we find liquid glass pouring out of very fine nozzles. After coming out of the nozzle the fibers are joined into a single strand which is wound around a spool. These strands are combined with other materials to produce a variety of products. One of the most notable product types is what is called glass-fiber-reinforced plastic. To produce this kind of material, the glass fibers are combined with a polymer resin, usually polyester. Polyester itself is a very fragile material, but the infusion of glass fibers into it makes it flexible and durable at the same time. With their ability to trap air within themselves, fiberglass blocks were initially mainly used for the purposes of insulation. But over a passage of time, fiberglass has become a popular material with wider industrial use. Apart from thermal and electrical insulation, it is also used for purposes like sound absorption and reinforcement of various materials especially plastic products. It is used to make high strength fabrics, mats, pole vault poles, automobile bodies, swimming pool linings, roofing, furniture, goalie masks, skis, fishing rods, archery bows, surfboards and boat hulls. With such myriad uses, it is evident why fiberglass construction is quite in demand. Fiberglass has such ideal qualities that make it useful in many product applications. It is because of this reason that fiberglass construction supersedes other types of construction. One main advantage with fiberglass is that it offers a high degree of design flexibility. The fact that it can be molded, tooled and manufactured in varying ways is what lends it favorable with manufacturers. Then there is also the advantage of affordability. It is relatively economical to work with fiberglass than with other materials. Fiberglass is known for its property of having a higher surface area to weight ratio. Other good points of fiberglass are that it is light in weight, durable and non-corrosive. It also has a higher resistance to extreme environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, ultra-violet light and chemical acids. Another reason why manufacturers favor fiberglass is because it can be produced in diverse textures, finishes and colors depending on the requirement. These are the reasons that majority of the manufacturers are turning to fiberglass construction. The evidence is more visible in the boat building business. It has been discovered that fiberglass helps to build really high quality of boats. Boats that are built using fiberglass are durable and strong. With technical improvements in fiberglass production it has become the most preferred material for boat manufacturers. In the boat industry fiberglass is used by the boat manufacturers for building solid hulls for their yachts and boats. |
